Do you find yourself constantly worrying about the future? Thinking, “If I can’t see it, I can’t prepare for it. The world could end, and I’m not ready!” If so, you are far from alone.
Mental health professionals call this anticipatory anxiety—a hyper-focus on the future and the inability to control or predict what’s coming.
Why We Worry
Most of us occasionally fret over small things—forgetting to sign the kids up for soccer, missing a dentist appointment, or replaying awkward social moments from decades ago. The problem is that our brain doesn’t distinguish between real and imagined threats. It’s hardwired for survival, craving predictability even when it makes us miserable.
Ironically, the more we try to anticipate every possible outcome, the more we validate our fear. The result? Feeling frozen, unable to act, or tossing and turning at 2 a.m., wondering if we remembered to do everything “right.”
Managing the Fear of the Unknown
Clinical psychologist Dr. Julie Smith, in her book Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? (2022), shares practical strategies to regain control over anticipatory anxiety:
-
Recognize beliefs are not facts. You don’t have to “buy into” every fearful thought.
-
Question the power of the thought. Are you giving it more weight than it deserves?
-
Shift your focus. Move your attention to a new topic or task to break the cycle of rumination.
-
Reframe fear as opportunity. Turn uncertainty into actionable solutions instead of paralysis.
Different Approaches Work for Different People
Some people can compartmentalize their fears, letting them sit quietly in the back of the brain until needed. Others, like me, obsessively analyze every angle, “flipping fears like pancakes” all night. Understanding your approach to uncertainty is key to managing it.
A Simple Practice to Regain Control
When fear arises:
-
Acknowledge it. Thank your brain for doing its job.
-
Examine whether the fear is valid or blown out of proportion.
-
Tell yourself: “I’ve got this.”
By bringing fears into the light and addressing them calmly, we can reclaim control and reduce the emotional hold of uncertainty.
